Hey everyone, time for another potluck! Karen and I will also be sharing about our experience at the CLF Student Conference in Winnipeg.

Lunchtime Meeting

Hi everyone,

I hope that reading break has left us all refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of the second semester. I'm emailing because it's time for our lunchtime meetings to resume again! Sorry they've been irregular but I've had some trouble booking a room lately. I've managed to get Room 157 for tomorrow at lunch. For those that have been unable to come out for a while, it'd be great to see you again! I look forward to catching up and praying together =)

We're halfway through the term now and hopefully everyone's still going strong and the stress levels are still manageable. So far we've had a great first meeting and a successful first prayer meeting. We've received feedback on what the CLSA members would like to see, which includes monthly dinners, lunchtime prayer meetings, guest speakers on the topic of being a Christian in the legal context, and some local charity work.

We're excited to announce that Lloyd Douglas, our first guest speaker of the year, will join us tomorrow at lunch. He will be addressing the struggles of keeping up our faith as busy students and as future lawyers. He will be giving us 3 sessions in total, starting with the first:

1) Integrity/Daily Life with the Lord
2) Integrity/Daily Life with the World
3) Integrity/Daily Life as a Christian Lawyer.

Stay tuned for the next upcoming annual dinner hosted by Catherine Morris and Paul Scambler. As many of you already know, if you're on facebook, we have a group that is an excellent source of notices and reminders for our events.

Hello to all our new and returning CLSA members!

We warmly invite you to attend our first meeting of the year. It's taking place this Thursday, September 25th, in ROOM 204 from 12:30 -1:30. We will be introducing this year's executive, getting to know each other a little better, and most importantly, planning this year's fun-filled EVENTS! We have a lot of ideas to help make this year filled with fellowship, charity, and of course love for our fellow law students. We also need some input on what YOU would like to see this year from the CLSA, so please mark the date on your busy schedules. We know it's at lunch time, so feel free to bring in some munchies!

Spring Semester Summary

The CLSA had a successful spring semester and enjoyed advertising our Christian presence in the law school.

In February we sent three CLSA members to the CLF Conference in Windsor, Ontario. Their reports of the Conference were encouraging and they strongly urged future members to attend the next conference.

In March we held a succesful Coat and Blanket Drive and were able to collect a few boxes of donations which all went to the wonderful people at C.A.R.T.S. We hope to do this again next year. In April we held two succesful events: We gave away pastries with a brief note explaining the meaning of Good Friday to Christians. And on the last day of classes we had out first ever Goodies Giveaway! All the snacks, literature and even Bibles were welcomed by our classmates!

CLSA First Meeting of the Term

Student Conference - Februrary 21-24

If you're interested in attending the CLSA has secured funding from UVic LSS and Law Foundation BC Block Grant. There is also funding available from CLF as well.

It's at UWindsor and the conference theme is 1 in Christ.

Well, that semester definitely flew by! I am sure everyone is scurrying around, studying, outlining and getting really excited to go home to their families after a long/fast semester!

There is talk of a December gathering, details to follow via email if something were to be organized.

We are collecting food donations for the Mustard Seed from now until the end of December. So, bring some non-perishable food items for the food box.
Also, they are in need of volunteers for gift wrapping (a fundraiser they do)

A word for the first years: if you need advice or help with anything don't hesitate to call on the upper years, we've been through it!

Welcome Back

Well, the summer is over and another term of law school has commenced. A number of CLSA members are not on campus this term, but with the incoming first year students and remaining CLSA members on campus it should be a great year.

The past president of the UBC CLSA, Geoffrey Trotter, is clerking with the BC Supreme Court in Victoria this year and wants to host a dinner at his house for the UVic CLSA members and incoming students. Stay tuned for more details!

The first CLSA meeting will be held on Monday, September 24. Room to be determined.

I look forward to meeting all the new students and hope that you will come full of ideas for events, speakers, and regular meetings.

"No Strings Attached" Tuesday Dinners

Emmanuel Baptist Church has now begun hosting dinners for University of Victoria and Camosun College students on Tuesday evenings. EBC is a 10 minute walk/2 minute bus ride away at the base of Ring Road on Cedar Hill Cross Road. These fantastic home-cooked meals are absolutely FREE, so don't miss out!

Book study with Victoria lawyers
